Some observations on this work
By Popescu Ion-Petru
Although this book was very pleasant for me as it contained concentrated information on the situation of the Ottoman Empire during the second half of the15th century (of which I am very interested in), one can only but wonder about how accurate some of the affirmations in this work are.

For example on the situation of the Romania Principalities (Transylvania, Wallachia and Moldavia). On page 190 it is said very clearly that because of the fall of Kilia and Akkerman "Moldavia and Wallachia thus became trans-Danubian provinces of the Ottoman Empire, remaining under Turkish rule for nearly four centuries".

From a common sense understanding this affirmation would basically imply that they were to become"paºaliks" no more and no less. Where the real situation was that Stephen the Great was ruling with absolute authority in Moldavia (even thou in the later years he payed tribute to the Ottomans) until 1504, when he died. Moreover there were long episodes of virtually independent rulers of the Romanian principalities that fought successful campaigns against the Ottoman Empire after 1504:

*In Moldavia:*Petru Rares for example had to be subued by Soliman the Magnificent with a huge 200000 army but he himself had a 70000 army at that time and had for years ignored the Ottoman pleas. One can only imagine how "influential" was the Turkish Rule in Moldavia during Petru's reign

*John The Terrible who although defeated, in the end, by the Turks (betrayal by at his own court played an important role here) managed, at one time, to impose his own candidate on the Wallachian throne.
*Dimitrie Cantemir who basically confronted the Ottoman Empire side by side with his ally Peter the Great of Russia at Stanilesti where his army suffered a serious defeat and he had to flee to Russia to his protector

In Wallachia:

*Michael the Great who, not only obtained a series of victories against the Turks (even crossing the Danube into Bulgaria) but also managed to briefly unite (for the first time) the three Romanian Principalities.

Of course these are only the major examples without going too much into details, but as one can see, clearly these voievodes were not under supreme rule of the Empire and sometimes they were very dangerous for the stability of the whole northen borders of the Turkish realm.

Also at page 140 the situation is so presented that it would imply that the defeat at Rasboieni was complete, where in reality the Turkish army could not enter Suceava (the capital of Molavia), Iasi , Neamt or Hotin fortresses and they had to retreat, harassed by the Moldavian forces after an inconclusive and very expensive campaign.

These actions prove that the situation of the Romanian principalities was not as definitive as it is described by the work "The Grand Turk". While I agree that there was a period of 100 years of almost complete domination (1720-1821) when the voievodes of Moldavia and Wallachia were Greeks appointed by the Sultan, the South Carpathian Romanian Principalities were never included in the Empire as provinces and at no time a Turkish provincial administration was instituted or imposed by the Sultan like for example, in present day Bulgaria.
