Usually, we investigate the physical characteristics of three-dimensional bodies. Their characteristic prop::!rties are often related to a unit volume, i.e. it is assumed that they are volume-independent. This assumption is legitimate as long as the dimensions are 'normal', i.e. more or less within macroscopic limits; but as soon as one dimension becomes so small that there is a considerable increase in a surface-to-volume ratio, that assumption is no longer valid.

Excellent Comprehensive Text

This book is a 'must have' if your work involves or utilizes thin films. Ludmila Eckertov has compiled a very comprehensive text on the materials, preparation, measurement, mechanisms, diagnosis, properties, and applications of thin films. This second edition is excellent but I look forward to an updated edition.

This 1986 edition is good, but an updated edition would be even better ... there's been significant innovation in this field in the past 18 years.
