Worthless Boy: A Memoir, by Orva Schrock

This is the unusual and succinct memoir of a man born and raised Amish. His childhood was often physically brutal and emotionally harrowing. His Amish preacher father was short-tempered and demanding and very frequently reprimanding and punishing. The author shares many details of childhood [and adult] abuse, confusion, hard won insights, and eventual turbulent entry into the mainstream of American "worldly" life. It is ultimately a story of triumph over tyranny and a sharp critique of abusive parenting practices and crazy-making religious indoctrination.

The Road Less Travelled
By Tom Thompson
Reading this book was a deeply disturbing and yet very moving and ultimately a positive experience. The author and I are basically the same age and grew up in the same country at the same time. Our lives are so different and yet very similar. I have spent my adult life in the mental health field and have heard horrible life stories. But among the worst are those of religious abuse from those who were trapped in a religious ideology that condemned them to hell for attempting to question, and be sane and healthy.

Orva was born and raised Amish. His whole childhood was full of physical, emotional, mental and spiritual abuse. And yet somehow, something very sane, very spiritual managed to survive and lead him out of this religious hell into a life of honest investigation, discovery and love.

Without suffering, how many of us would look deeply into our lives? Suffering turns some of us into monsters, others into truly spiritual beings. The truly spiritual path is not easy and so it is the road less travelled.

Like Orva, after many years of working with people, I have also concluded that religion breaks the spirit of the person and keeps them chained in a prison of ignorance, guilt, shame, despair, confusion, hatred and fear. Most do not have the courage to ask the simple questions of, "Is this true?", "how do I know what is really true?", "where is the love and forgiveness?"

Orva, instead of being broken by his experiences as a child, somehow survived and even thrived. He is no longer a religious man, but is profoundly spiritual. He took the road less travelled. It was not an easy one. He had to face many demons in his journey.

Although this book is disturbing, I couldn't put it down and read it right through. I feel a kinship with Orva because even though our early lives were very different, we travelled similar paths that have arrived in this space of spiritual freedom.

This is a hopeful story. Thank you, Orva, for sharing so honestly.

A Worthwhile Boy
By R. Hanson
~

I've said it before: Many people set out on a spiritual path because what they've been raised to believe doesn't make sense anymore - or directly contradicts their reality - and they can no longer tolerate the dissonance.

We'd like our lives to make sense. Our lives SHOULD make sense. Yet sometimes, a deeply unsettling feeling washes over everything we witness and are told. When we start to get to the age of reasoning (about age 13, by my way of figuring) we realize that something is terribly wrong, but we don't have the capacity to effectively deal with it. At that point, we turn to either conformity - going along with the parents in order to get along - or rebellion, either open or passive.

Rebellion isn't much of a sideline, given enough time. At the least, it's no good way to live, as the thoughts that brought us to rebellion continue to nag and plague us, causing poor behavior and the potential for self-destruction.

Reaching the point of exasperation, we look for answers, but they are not usually to be found in the vapid and stale principles of fundamentalist religion. We may try different religions, different practices, different methods of insight, perhaps even shunning the world and its accepted beliefs altogether, if one is lucky or tenacious enough. Seek we must.

Orva's path is much like my own. That's why I like to call him my Brother, though we've never met in person.

All of us walk through the world with a unique footstep, and yet the dynamic that causes us to seek a better life runs common to many. Orva and I were fortunate enough to `meet' in our searching. He seemed like a great guy, but I never could have imagined...

Beatings. Whippings. Rejection. Insults. Torment. Hate. Derision. Brutality. Devilish siblings. A complete lack of love, kindness, and affection that any parent should shower upon any one of their children, regardless. Period.

Orva's new book will startle you. You may even start to think, "Man, I though I had it rough. My upbringing was easy by comparison." I was outraged when I read the story. Were I to have walked in Orva's shoes, it's quite likely I would have done something very, very bad, either to myself or to my tormentor. One thing that I've taken away from the read is that there are people out there who are extremely warped in their notion of right and wrong, yet call themselves pious and righteous. (Well, I've long known that, but Orva's father took it to the extreme.) I think the first part of the book hammers home just how bad this can get given certain fundamentalist ideas. I never before knew that it ran quite so deep.

I hated to read this book, and yet I simply couldn't put it down. Through chapter after chapter, Orva tells horrible and haunting stories of years of abuse at the hands of his father, a devoutly religious Amish preacher. (Go figure.) Orva chronicles his attempt to conform, then his acts of rebellion. Finally, toward the end of the book we see Orva finding his way, and then passing along his insights and recommendations so that others might have an easier time on the path...

Which is how it should be. People who have gone before should leave signposts.

Orva is a gift to those who might think there's no way out, and his book will help some people, to be sure.

I'm just glad that my brother has found peace in his life. How did he do it? You gotta read this book.

Worthless Boy - But Not a Worthless Story
By Shannon L. Yarbrough
Imagine being the outsider amongst a dozen siblings. You are the one who is eager to fit in and be a good worker like your older brothers, but you are labeled "worthless" by your father. You yearn for the attention of your mother, but she is too busy raising your younger siblings and attending to the family household.

Imagine being this child in an Amish household, eager for the attention that a young blossoming mind deserves, but lost in a world of religious stronghold and misunderstanding.

This was the childhood of Orva Schrock, and this book, Worthless Boy, is his memoir. Divided into 2 parts consisting of just seven chapters over 81 pages, Schrock wastes not a word painting a picture of a troubled and disturbed childhood, a boy yearning for the attention of his parents but getting most persecution instead.

The book begins with this sentence: I was born as fuel for hell, or so was the deepest metaphysical understanding I was capable of.

Part 1 of the book begins when Orva is three and traces several concrete moments throughout his childhood and teen years. He longed for the attention of his father, but got mostly verbal and physical abuse which resulted in quite a bit of mental anguish which led to Orva becoming quite the young rowdy boy who acts out for attention.

Add to this the "hardcore" religious beliefs of his Amish upbringing and the move of his large family for better work to keep the family fed. Part 1 ends at his ninth grade year of school, which was also the end of his formal education.

Part 2 is a quick glimpse into the 50 years that have passed as Orva reflects on the death of his father, and spends one whole chapter quoting from various books he has read and which made him a stronger man.

Though the book is very heart wrenching, and impeccably polished when it comes to editing and formatting, it is more of a long essay and carries quite a hefty price for a book that is under 100 pages and hard cover. But, our stories are not always full of detail with long drawn out pictures. Such is the joy of self-publishing, and this is Orva's story.

Review
"Maurer and co-author Katie Weeks have created a must-have manual for anyone considering beginning an interior design practice. Running a successful practice requires more than talent and enthusiasm. The subsequent parts include starting and sustaining the business, and the sale or turnover when it's time to retire. Several examples of actual business practice follow an overview that explains each topic area and how they apply to an interior design practice." (San Francisco Book Review, May 25, 2010)

Read this book before you read any other design books!!!
By Kathleen B. Goldfarb
As an professional member of ASID and designer for 37+ years, I applaud and welcome this GREAT book! This book was expensive, but well worth the investment and should be required reading for all designers who wish to earn a healthy income, enough to have a real retirement. In fact, it should be re-read and shared with all who will contribute to your success or failure.

I have networked and attended countless programs and CEU's in a quest to hone my knowledge, skills and most importantly, profitability so I can support my family and have a reasonable lifestyle. The formal training offered in design schools does not come near to offering students enough business exposure within a true context. Any designer / decorator with entrepreneurial aspirations should intern in a business setting and spend at least 2 years in face-to-face commercial/consumer sales or problem-solving for any product or service.

Typically, sound business practices as outlined in this book are not implemented by most of my design peers, most of whom either fail, exit the business or merely play around as they follow any blind lead in search of their next fee. Few earn enough on a consistent basis (even after years in the business) to support an average family. This book is filled with well-written firm scenarios from around the country, even detailing real failures and remedies. It's great to see so many relevant graphics and the contract documents and ASID Code of Ethics at the end are a bonus.

I would rate higher, but would have liked to read more about some specific topics, namely franchising and opportunities for interior designers in management or other industry-related careers where there are greater options. Interior design is often an unstable career and personal success is tied directly to one's networking efforts and being well-connected, integrity, ability to communicate well and generate new business more than design talent or just desire. This is true whether one owns their own business or works for others. What is your value to your/their firm's bottom line?

As a young designer, it provided valuable insight into small business operations and I foresee it being on my bookshelf for reference for a long time. A wide range of case studies are provided, and a vast range of topics discussed from staffing to branding and marketing. It's an excellent book that focuses in on tips and information specifically for the design industry. A must-read for any potential or seasoned design business owner.

This is a great resource for all interior designers whether just thinking of starting a business or for seasoned designers with a growing firm. Each page of this book is packed with an abundance of useful information, covering all aspects of a design business. Adding real designers' success stories makes it read more like a novel than a reference book. This one is a keeper!

Review
"As a sustainability professional for over 10 years, I found Adam's perspective on what it means to be human, what motivates people, and how to share my message with others both insightful and liberating. I learned new ways to live and work that are more effortless and life-giving, something I truly appreciate as one who has been to burn-out, and back to balance, in my own sustainability journey."

- Daniel Lawse - Chief Century Thinker, Sustainability Consultant, Verdis Group, Bio-Inspired Leadership Immersion
"It's one thing to have numbers. It's another thing to know what to do with them. And the soft stuff - that Adam gives such brilliant guidance to people on - is an incredible set of resources for people trying not to screw this up when they are being led by their passions."

- Bob Willard, Author of Sustainability Champion's Guidebook, The Next Sustainability Wave, and The New Sustainability Advantage

"Adam has done a fantastic job pulling this all together in a reader-friendly way!  It really hit home personally for me... He can summarize this information because he 'got it' already from experience, and got it at an age almost thirty years younger than when I got it (today)."

- John Cusack -  Senior Manager in Responsible Investment, Co-founder of Innovest Strategic Advisors, Founder of Gifford Park Associates
"This beautiful book points to the heart of what hinders my capacity to make a difference - me. Sometimes I stop relating to people as people and I think my agenda is more important than theirs, I lose touch with them and thus lose my ability to make a difference."

- Mike George -  Owner of Cafe Gratitude Kansas City, Software Engineer, Creator of Phenomenons of Consciousness Seminar

Down to earth
By Michael George
Clearly the author has gone through the ups and downs of trying to make a difference and I think he has some good insights into what works when working with people. My favorite part is about halfway through where he talks about the stages-of-influence. They were simple and obvious after they were pointed out and a great framework for me to work with.

A well thought out and wonderfully presented manual for staying positive while you debate viewpoints on the environment.
By Steve Windsor
Written in a self help style for people that are very passionate about helping the environment, Adam shares his viewpoint on environmental issues in a well thought out and wonderfully presented fashion. It is obvious that he has passion for his own environmental concerns.

He offers sound advice and strategies for discussing those viewpoints and concerns with those that do not share his or, if you agree with his views of the struggles facing the environment, your own views and concerns.

This book is less of a “The sky is falling, wake up!” kind of book, and more of a “Here's how you cope with everyday life if you have a passion to make sure that the sky never falls.”

Guaranteed good read and a valuable tool for anyone entering the emotionally charged world of environmental debate.

Crook County: Racism and Injustice in America's Largest Criminal Court, by Nicole Gonzalez Van Cleve

Americans are slowly waking up to the dire effects of racial profiling, police brutality, and mass incarceration, especially in disadvantaged neighborhoods and communities of color. The criminal courts are the crucial gateway between police action on the street and the processing of primarily black and Latino defendants into jails and prisons. And yet the courts, often portrayed as sacred, impartial institutions, have remained shrouded in secrecy, with the majority of Americans kept in the dark about how they function internally. Crook County bursts open the courthouse doors and enters the hallways, courtrooms, judges' chambers, and attorneys' offices to reveal a world of punishment determined by race, not offense.

Nicole Gonzalez Van Cleve spent ten years working in and investigating the largest criminal courthouse in the country, Chicago-Cook County, and based on over 1,000 hours of observation, she takes readers inside our so-called halls of justice to witness the types of everyday racial abuses that fester within the courts, often in plain sight. We watch white courtroom professionals classify and deliberate on the fates of mostly black and Latino defendants while racial abuse and due process violations are encouraged and even seen as justified. Judges fall asleep on the bench. Prosecutors hang out like frat boys in the judges' chambers while the fates of defendants hang in the balance. Public defenders make choices about which defendants they will try to "save" and which they will sacrifice. Sheriff's officers cruelly mock and abuse defendants' family members.

Crook County's powerful and at times devastating narratives reveal startling truths about a legal culture steeped in racial abuse. Defendants find themselves thrust into a pernicious legal world where courtroom actors live and breathe racism while simultaneously committing themselves to a colorblind ideal. Van Cleve urges all citizens to take a closer look at the way we do justice in America and to hold our arbiters of justice accountable to the highest standards of equality.

Review
"Gonzalez Van Cleve's account of the American criminal justice system, based on thousands of hours of careful observation behind the doors of the Cook County-Chicago courthouse, reveals the paradoxes and pain of our modern legal culture, including the effects on the punished and punishers alike. As Van Cleve's investigation so startlingly lays bare, just because legal institutions profess to be colorblind does not make it so. Reading Crook County helps us see the difference."—Henry Louis Gates, Jr., Alphonse Fletcher University Professor, Harvard University

"Beautifully written and keenly insightful, Crook County is a horror story I couldn't put down. May Nicole Gonzalez Van Cleve's masterful book do for the Chicago criminal court what Upton Sinclair's The Jungle did to the meat packing industry: clean it up. Powerful, disturbing and paradigm shifting, Crook County is ethnography at its best."—Paul Butler, Georgetown Law, author of The Chokehold: Policing Black Men

"Crook County is a searing account of how criminal courts serve as the gateway to racialized punishment. Turning a spotlight on the everyday actions of prosecutors, judges, and defense attorneys, Gonzalez Van Cleve reveals a court culture that dehumanizes and discriminates against defendants, victims, and family members. Her eye-opening analysis forces us to confront the possibility [or reality] that mass incarceration results from mass wrongful convictions of black and brown people forced into a devastating charade."— Dorothy Roberts, University of Pennsylvania, author of Killing the Black Body: Race, Reproduction, and the Meaning of Liberty

Urgent and important, Crook County is a powerful, eye-opening account of the code of the big-city court system. Carefully dissecting this crucial step of the 'school to prison pipeline,' Nicole Gonzalez Van Cleve illustrates just how the scales of justice are cynically stacked against black and brown inner city young people, undermining their faith in our criminal justice system. Crook County is a must-read."—Elijah Anderson, Yale University, author of Code of the Street and The Cosmopolitan Canopy

Thought provoking and sure to be controversial among court workers.
By Ralph A. Weisheit
I agree with the reviewer who suspects the author started the project with an agenda. When I picked up the book I wondered the same and I began reading with some skepticism. However, she makes a very strong case, leaving me to feel that if she undertook the study with an agenda it turned out to have some basis in reality. This is one of those rare examples of an academic writing a book that is an interesting read. As it happened I was reading the book at the very time the Stanford University swimmer was getting a slap on the wrist for raping a coed - something the judge justified by suggesting that a harsh penalty would interfere with the man's future success. While the judge's ruling was in my view outrageous, it was precisely the kind of scenario the author describes in this book. The book is based on a decade of observation and interviews and focuses exclusively on Cook County, Illinois. The reader is left to wonder about how widely the situation provided here applies in other jurisdictions. I was particularly impressed with the author's description of the pressures placed on judges, prosecutors, and public defenders. While an individual defendant or an individual victim may see their case as unique, the book does an excellent job of showing the larger context in which individual cases are handled - such as a lenient treatment of one defendant might put pressure to be particularly tough on the next. Like any good book this one makes you think.

A must-read for everybody who cares how the other half lives
By Robert S. Becker
I have to go all the way back to Sudhir Venkatesh's Gang Leader for a Day: A Rogue Sociologist Takes to the Streets to find comparable insights into criminal justice in Chicago. Comparable because both books are based on the authors' experience of real life - in one case on the streets, in the other in the courts. Both authors are incredibly brave investigators and eyewitness reporters of not just what they saw, but also what they learned. Crook County is raw truth served up in compelling literary style. More than a necessary indictment of County culture, it also provides context for headlines I read every single day in the Chicago Tribune about violence in the streets. We cannot really understand what's going on in our ghettos unless we also understand what's going on around and on top of the ghetto. This book courageously provides that context. It's a must-read for everybody who cares how the other half lives in 2016.

This book---> straight to the top of your reading list!
By Amazon Customer
Nicole Gonzalez Van Cleve has written a piercing and haunting expose' of the racial injustice that is at the core of our criminal justice system. In doing so, Van Cleve fills a vital and yet overlooked gap in our knowledge about the legal pipeline from the streets to the jail cell. Plenty of work has been published on racial biases in legislation, policing, convictions as well as resulting disparities in sentencing, incarceration rates and collateral consequences. What connects all of these different links in the pipeline, however, is the process by which criminal courts dole out "justice." In vivid, heartbreaking detail, Van Cleve confirms the accuracy of Malcolm Feeley's notion that the "process is the punishment." She illustrates how the very procedures that supposedly render the legal process neutral, objective and colorblind in fact serve to disorient and subjugate low-income people of color as a matter of routine. The process not only denies the humanity of Blacks and Hispanics--who are treated as "criminals" far in advance of a conviction--but also systematically churns out wrongful convictions. Van Cleve's examples are often strikingly poignant, as when an older non-English speaking Hispanic women wanders timidly around the courthouse trying to find out if she is in the right place, only to be barked at furiously by a guard. These stories are told with a level of granularity and detail that is lacking in other work on the topic and that only someone who has spent countless hours navigating this grim world could achieve. And yet, because the narrative is so compelling it is easy to miss or under-appreciate the rigor of Van Cleve's research design. She does not only conduct ethnographic fieldwork and interviews herself in both the public and private negotiating spaces of multiple courthouses within the Cook County system, reflexively using her insider status as an employee of that system to gain further access. She also trains a cadre of 130 law students to conduct many more observations and interviews, using well-designed protocols to standardize and organize the material. Though deceptively readable and accessible to wide readership, this book represents quite an impressive and systematic data collection effort and powerfully enriches our understanding of the growing entanglement of justice and racialized punishment in American society. Scholars, undergraduates and general readers who are interested in learning more about the issues that plague our legal system cannot afford to miss it.

From the Author: How to Get Your First Major SEO Client
Author Danny Dover
I have worked with many of the webĘžs most popular websites as an SEO consultant, and each of them shared one infuriating trait. While their SEO problems were not that difficult, the process of getting them to hire me was.

Before I can explain how I overcame this barrier, let me set the context. Large clients generally suffer from many or all of the same difficulties:

• The potential major client’s website scaled quickly but without SEO in mind. This makes going back and working with a legacy Content Management System (CMS) very difficult.
• The amount of inbound links is no longer a problem, but optimally passing the value of those links throughout the site is a problem.
• The production of content is no longer a problem, but that same content being duplicated across multiple URLs is massively devaluing that same content’s value.
• Big organizations generally have very big websites. While the raw materials for a search engine optimized site are there, the information architecture is not.

So how do you use this knowledge to get your first major SEO client? The answer is to create solutions to these problems before the potential client even identifies they exist and then sell your services to them in the correct way. Once you have done that, offer your solutions at a cheaper than market price (for your first major client only!) and make it clear you have the follow through necessary to guide these changes through their companies structure.

That sounds good but how do I establish myself as a trusted source? That is exactly the correct question! Larger companies usually need hard data in order to make these decisions. This means you will need appropriate case studies. Case studies pay dividends so always be sure to create them after working with noteworthy clients. (I even recommend doing this in exchange for a lower price, if necessary.) Since in this scenario, you haven’t already had a major client in the past, the best case study isn’t really a case study at all. Use the potential clients site as an “in progress case study” and cite actual problems that exist on their site today and show them the results your previous (although smaller) clients got in the past. Back this up with inside information on how others have seen similar results at other major websites. The most cost effective way to get that evidence is to take other SEOs who already worked with major clients out to lunch or coffee in exchange for examples and anecdotes they experienced with past clients. This will both help you become more knowledge and improve your ability to sell yourself.

This combination of pre-identifying the potential major clients’ problems, reassuring them that you have the stamina to push the changes through their company structure, demonstrating the type of results they will likely receive from working with you and basing all of that on case studies and actual examples make up the system you need to get your first big SEO client. While this should get you the results you need, more details are available in this book, Search Engine Optimization Secrets, in case you need more detailed instructions. This system has worked for me and it has worked for others.

Now it is your turn.

The Perfect Roadmap for a One-Person Shop or a Full-Scale SEO Agency
By Amazon Customer
I don't usually do reviews but this book took me by surprise. I am impressed with the content, it was a fresh perspective on search engine optimization and it offered some really practical, useful advice that virtually anyone who understand the basics of SEO would be able to implement.

I eagerly pre-ordered the book because I have read Danny's articles on SEOmoz. It came 7 days ahead of the scheduled release date so I was delighted with Amazon.

I started reading and I couldn't put it down. Maybe I'm a nerd but I live and breathe online marketing and SEO was the core of it all.
Here are some of the key takeaways:

1. SEO Consulting Process - Learn how to win clients, how much you should charge for your services (master services agreement,
NDAs, SOW) and the best deliverables/reporting for your clients.

2. Suggested SEO Pricing - Website Audit, E-Commerce Site Audit, Link Building, Reputation Management, Social Media Management,
Keyword Research and etc. (Very helpful if you are looking at doing consulting work, it is so hard to determine the right price
point on your own).

3. 58-Page Comprehensive Technical SEO Site Audit - Unless you paid for SEO site audits in the past you won't be able to get a more
in-depth sample. Oh and he also show you how to do the Site Audit as well.

4. How to Conduct an E-Commerce Audit - In my opinion the first 4 items are worth it's weight in gold for a SEO freelancer, SEO
consultant or even an SEO agency.

5. SEO for Local Business - What works and what doesn't: customer opinions/reviews, universal search, image search, video search
and ranking factors.

6. Optimizing for Alternative Search Engines - Amazon, YouTube, Facebook, Delicious, Flickr and Twitter (this help outline how
search and social is truly intersecting and in order to be successful on the web you need to go beyond Google).

7. The Essentials - The book includes an explanation of how SEO works, top SEO tools to use, finding and troubleshooting common and
advanced SEO problems and of course SEO Best Practices (some of which you can find on SEOmoz).

The bottomline: Danny makes SEO actionable for the average person, more importantly he makes it lethal for the seasoned SEO veteran
(you can become a superstar-SEO-ninja with this book).

Since the SEO field is always rapidly changing, I highly recommend picking up this book as soon as possible (today if you can) because it will give you 80-90 percent of everything you need to start consulting successfully with SEO right away. I teach SEO at a local community college and I am contemplating to make this a required reading, it is that good and applicable.

The SEO BIBLE
By Chris Walls
Just go the book, and haven't put it down since. I have been doing SEO for 8 years and this is by far one of the best if not the BEST book on SEO techniques out there. I recommend it for everyone.

With the Kindle I have been purchasing every SEO book that has come out for a couple months now, looking and looking for that needle in the haystack. All you have to do is go back and look at all the reviews I have done on them. Finally the book I have been looking for and hoping for has come out. The way its written, the notes on the side explaining subjects more, the highlights in the book exactly where I would highlight are perfect.

It's a book that says exactly what it means he tells you secrets, he opens your mind and doors to SEO. Chapter 14 SEO Resources gives you all the info you need, he even goes into attending an SEO Conference. I have never read about that in any SEO book. Why is this important you ask, because if you haven't been to an SEO conference you need to get your but there and his book explains everything.

The Tips in the book are great, as well as the entire book overall. There is lots of crap out there, don't be fooled Danny knows his stuff inside and out, shows hard examples and everything.

Actually, don't go buy it and make my job of getting my clients to the top way easier for me.

This is the first SEO book you should get.
By John Q. Shearer
Danny was the lead SEO at SEOMoz and made a great video about local search last November. That video compelled me to signup for the pro SEOMoz membership. I am an in-house SEO, and by March 2011 I was ranking #1 in most relevant keywords for my market (seattle painting, house painting) primarily because of the tools, strategies, etc. I learned from Danny and SEOMoz.

Purchasing any book Danny might work on is a no-brainer for me...however I was blown away by what I am learning from the book. Many SEO books on the market are basically re-hashed material you can find by searching for "what is SEO"..with low hanging fruit advice like "get your tags right, get good links, create good content", etc ; Search Engine Optimization Secrets however breaks down the SEO PROCESS from creating strategic plan to technical hurdles, best practices, site audits, implementing tracking tools, and so on. I consider myself an adequate SEO but this book has made me re-examine my process; I could be squeezing more juice out of certain procedures I paid little attention to.

I wish I would have read this book sooner.
