Principles and Tools for Supply Chain Management with Student CD-ROM, by Scott Webster

Webster’s Principles and Tools of Supply Chain Management provides a basic introduction to the concepts and tools of supply chain management and delivers an optimal balance of descriptive and analytical material. The book is divided into three parts: Foundation; Principles and Tools; and Synthesis. Part 1 introduces the basic concepts of supply chain management—concepts that are referred to and expanded upon in subsequent chapters; Part 2 focuses on the application of supply chain concepts within the context of particular supply chain activities (i.e., buy, make, moVe, store, or sell); Part 3, consisting of a single chapter, offers a macro perspective of supply chain management. It reconstructs and synthesizes earlier content while taking a “step back” to review and consider the entire system. A case study is included at the end of each chapter. Some of these cases focus on technology. Chapters that introduce analytical models begin with simple analyses and introduce added complexity and realism as the chapter progresses, thereby offering instructors flexibility with respect to the degree of analytical rigor that they are able to require of their students.

This book is intended as an anthropological introduction to the Middle East and Central Asia. A second, complementary goal is to point out the contribution that the study of the Middle East and Central Asia is making to the main currents of anthropology, especially those that relate to the analysis of complex societies.

As anthropological scholarship on the major civilizational areas of the world has reached a critical intensity, different themes have emerged in each region that have then influenced ideas elsewhere. Because of the Middle East's complexity and diversity, several interrelated themes prevail. One group of issues is suggested by the study of Islam, Judaism, and Christianity and how these world religions are understood both as global movements and in their rich local manifestations in the Middle East. How do local understandings of Islam, for example, affect the wider currents of social thought and practice? How does a world religious tradition such as Islam shape, and become shaped by, the rapidly evolving economic and political contexts in which it is maintained and reproduced? What are the implications of mass higher education, the proliferation of media, and the greater ease of travel and rapid communication for the ways in which people think about religion and politics?

Another set of issues concerns ideas that people hold about their cultural and personal identities. In a region as complex as the Middle East, with its overlapping linguistic, ethnic, national, kin, gender, and class distinctions, the problems of how personal and collective identities are asserted and what they mean in differing historical and political contexts are especially crucial. With the rise of ethnonationalism and ethnoreligious nationalisms, such identities are at times more plastic and at other times seemingly more fixed than many earlier assumptions concerning their cultural bases have allowed.

A third theme concerns the political contexts and consequences of economic activities—the production, allocation, and consumption of goods and services. Together with practitioners of other disciplines, anthropologists analyze the social and cultural impact of developments such as massive labor emigration from poorer countries, the accrual of oil and mineral wealth to others, urbanization, agricultural innovation, and competition over scarce resources such as water. Anthropologists, like their colleagues in other disciplines, are concerned with what happens to cultural values and social relationships in the context of rapid economic and political change, and with the prospects for more "civil" societies and greater tolerance in the Middle East and Central Asia.

A fourth theme concerns changing interpretations of Middle Eastern and Central Asian societies and cultures by Westerners and by Middle Easterners and Central Asians themselves. This issue, once regarded as a historiographic one related only indirectly to "real" anthropological inquiry, is now considered implicit in any problem in the human sciences. Ideas concerning what constitutes valid description and interpretation of a culture or society have changed dramatically over the last two centuries, especially as modern anthropological inquiry has ceased to be primarily a Western enterprise. A comparison of this fourth edition with the first one, which appeared in 1981, also suggests how anthropology and our understanding of the Middle East have changed over the past two decades.

The first two editions of this book dealt only with the Middle East, a challenging task in itself. For all practical purposes, Central Asia and Azerbaijan were a world apart during the period of Soviet domination, sealed off from adjoining Middle Eastern countries. By the late 1980s, this situation had begun to change. Cross-border cultural and commercial ties between Middle Eastern and Central Asian countries were rapidly created or renewed, and Russian and Central Asian scholars intensified their cooperation with European and American colleagues, often working collaboratively with them.

Central Asia and the Muslim-majority regions of the Caucasus have decidedly different profiles from most countries in the Middle East, but many questions and issues applicable to the Middle East serve as useful points of departure for understanding Central Asia. Islam remains a basic (although not exclusive) element of identity for most people in Central Asia, as did Judaism for a significant (although rapidly declining) minority, in spite of vigorous anti-religious campaigns during much of the Soviet era. The privileged status of the Russian language, the "glass ceiling" for Central Asians in much of the former Soviet bureaucracy, and an economic system weighted toward extracting resources from the region rather than developing it bears many similarities to the colonial situation that prevailed in parts of the Middle East. Finally, exploring the interpretive framework by which Soviets and Russians sought to understand Central Asia and comparing developments in Central Asia with what Moscow-based scholars called the "foreign Muslim East" help us understand better the strengths and weaknesses of our own interpretive frameworks.

The third edition suggested points of departure for understanding Central Asia, especially the rising significance of ethnonational politics and the related "rewriting" of national and ethnic histories by some of the region's intellectuals. This fourth edition brings the account up to date, and for the first time incorporates World Wide Web resources and invites readers to augment this text by using them as well.

This book is intended both as a textbook and as an interpretive essay. It introduces students, colleagues, and general readers to the Middle East and Central Asia and to the questions that have been and are being developed by scholars and writers concerned with the two regions. Although this book is necessarily a synthesis of major research, I seek to develop a particular style of anthropological inquiry and show its contribution to the study of these two complementary regions. Many textbooks are derivative and unconvincing, in that they rarely convey the sense of discovery that leaps from the pages of the more extensive monographs that constitute the central substance of anthropological inquiry. I hope that this book contains the sense of discovery that I felt in creating it and keeping it up-to-date, and that readers will be prompted to explore some of the monographs, articles, and on-line resources mentioned in the text and footnotes. Chapters conclude with an annotated list of further readings and reference materials. The glossary, containing references to the places where terms are discussed in the text, provides an additional resource for comparison. An entirely new element in this edition is a guide to World Wide Web resources, "Internet Resource's for the Middle East and Central Asia."

The manuscript for the first edition of this book was completed on a portable typewriter in the Sultanate of Oman in late 1979. In that politically turbulent year, an informal group of oasis dwellers in a small provincial capital, often including myself, met almost daily for afternoon coffee in the relatively cool date-palm tree gardens. There we compared notes on what we heard and understood of regional politics from shortwave broadcasts in various languages and from what we ourselves saw and heard. These afternoon "news" sessions, devoted to regional and international politics, were as integral a part of oasis life as concern over property and water rights. Topics at that time included the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, revolutionary Iran, and the November 1979 siege of the Great Mosque in Mecca by militant Muslim radicals. Most of the older tribesmen had firsthand experience of war and rebellion and were fully aware of the fragile political environment in which they lived. It was no luxury to take fragments of information and "news," often recognized as imperfect or suspect, and to assess critically their basic and long-term implications in a manner not unfamiliar to good anthropological reporting and analysis. These "news" sessions, and similar ones conducted during return visits to Oman (and elsewhere) since then, underscored just how intertwined "local" political and economic events were with regional and global ones in the view of Middle Easterners (and Central Asians) from all walks of life.

Political and economic developments since that time have sustained and augmented interest in the Middle East, and interest in Central Asia has blossomed since the end of the Soviet era. Anthropological studies that have appeared since the 1980s reflect more directly than their predecessors how the "background" themes of religious understandings and institutions, kinship and family, loyalty and trust, gender relations, political authority—and the linkages between villages, regions, and states—are linked to the hard surfaces of politics and economics.

My approach is not encyclopedic. For reasons of historical accident and rapidly shifting political climates for research, American, European, Russian, Japanese, Iranian, Arab, Pakistani, Central Asian, and Turkish anthropologists and others have been better able to conduct field studies in some areas than in others. Likewise, the historical development of some countries has focused attention on specific issues. Thus many of the anthropological studies of Turkey by both indigenous and foreign researchers have concentrated on the themes of modernization and nation building, while those of North Africa have been concerned with the continuing impact of the earlier colonial experience. Even if the various countries of the Middle East were known equally well through anthropological studies, there would be little point in attempting a single composite of these materials, any more than such an effort for Africa or Latin America would be intellectually rewarding.

In general, my procedure is to develop specific topics on the basis of the best available documentation for a particular country or region and then to sketch as far as possible how patterns of kinship, political comportment, and the like compare with similar patterns elsewhere in the Middle East. For example, Chapter 4 discusses nomadism, especially through an examination of the A1 Rashid of Saudi Arabia and the Rwala Bedouin of Saudi Arabia and Jordan. They are chosen not because they represent a "lowest common denominator" for nomads in the Middle East but because they have been the subject of anthropological studies sufficiently detailed to form a basis for understanding the role of nomads and tribal peoples elsewhere in the region.

This fourth edition has been extensively revised and rewritten. Even with the addition of Internet citations and resources, the overall structure remains durable. Earlier editions, in addition to being used in courses in anthropology, have been adopted for courses in history, politics, religious studies, urban planning, international relations, and Middle Eastern civilizations in the United States, Australia, Canada, Great Britain, France, Germany, Italy (in translation), Japan (in translation), Russia, and the Middle East. In revising, I have sought to take the diversity of this audience into account, and I have benefited from the comments of many readers.

Reviewers, colleagues, friends, journalists, and students at my own university and others have offered numerous helpful comments and suggestions, many of which have been incorporated into this edition. In particular, I wish to thank Ismail Abu Shehadeh, Jon W. Anderson, Marjo Buitelaar, Christine Eickelman, William Herman, Willi Jansen, Anatoly Khazanov, William and Fidelity Lancaster, Ruth Mandel, Annalise Moors, Kazuo Ohtsuka, Lynn Rainville, Angeles Ramirez Fernandez, Richard Tapper, Martin van Bruinessen, and Gabrielle vom Bruck for comments that have directly contributed to shaping this edition.

The Wissenschaftskolleg (Institute for Advanced Study) of Berlin provided the library and work facilities critical to putting this fourth edition into final form, and the Claire Garber Goodman Fund of the Department of Anthropology at Dartmouth College made possible the introduction of World Wide Web media in this edition. I particularly wish to thank Cameron Brown at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem for his assistance in evaluating and locating Web resources appropriate to this book. Numerous colleagues and publishers have generously allowed the use of photographs and other materials, and they are acknowledged at appropriate places in the text.

The colleagues, friends, and reviewers who offered advice and support for the first three editions of this book are not listed here again, but my appreciation remains as strong as ever.

Dense and complete
By Amazon Customer
This book is quite dense. It makes for slow and contemplative reading. As a review of the anthropological literature of the Middle East, it should be a required text for any graduate or upper level undergraduate social sciences course focussing on the Middle East or Central Asia. Original source material is summarized and analyzed in comparison to other viewpoints, particularly across time. Anyone with further interest in particular areas of culture could skim the footnotes to find the complete citations for the original material. Each chapter also concludes with an annotated list of further readings, which would also be quite useful for the interested reader. My favorite sections were the second chapter, Intellectual Predecessors: East and West, and the last part of the last chapter, Writing Middle Eastern Anthropology.

Thorough but Uninspiring
By S. Robison
This text should definitely be used for those studying the Middle East from an anthropological approach, as it is a high-level, in-depth entry into the facets of the region. However, it is not without its flaws. Namely, the book seems disjointed at points. The author draws mainly from Moroccan example throughout the text, only fair since this is the country in which he has the most experience, yet other case studies from one chapter to the next could provide more continuity and sample similarity at points for a more coherent picture of an individual tribe, for example. Of course, samples need to be diverse, what I am recommending as an improvement is the ability to track a particular group of people through all of the facets that the book covers.

In this respect, the book is very successful. I particularly enjoyed the chapter on Orientalism, as the author provided an overarching perspective, as well as the chapter on nomadic lifestyles, which aided me also to gain a sense of perspective during case studies with previously nomadic Moroccan groups. On the whole, I would recommend this book as supplemental reading to an advanced course in the subject, yet it is too bland for those who have specific interest in a specific group or who are not previously accustomed to the subject.

The World in Six Songs: How the Musical Brain Created Human Nature, by Daniel Levitin

The author of the New York Times bestseller This Is Your Brain on Music reveals music's role in the evolution of human culture-and "will leave you awestruck" (The New York Times)

Daniel J. Levitin's astounding debut bestseller, This Is Your Brain on Music, enthralled and delighted readers as it transformed our understanding of how music gets in our heads and stays there. Now in his second New York Times bestseller, his genius for combining science and art reveals how music shaped humanity across cultures and throughout history.

Dr. Levitin identifies six fundamental song functions or types-friendship, joy, comfort, religion, knowledge, and love-then shows how each in its own way has enabled the social bonding necessary for human culture and society to evolve. He shows, in effect, how these "six songs" work in our brains to preserve the emotional history of our lives and species.

Dr. Levitin combines cutting-edge scientific research from his music cognition lab at McGill University and work in an array of related fields; his own sometimes hilarious experiences in the music business; and illuminating interviews with musicians such as Sting and David Byrne, as well as conductors, anthropologists, and evolutionary biologists. The World in Six Songs is, ultimately, a revolution in our understanding of how human nature evolved-right up to the iPod.

From Publishers Weekly
Charles Darwin meets the Beatles in this attempt to blend neuroscience and evolutionary biology to explain why music is such a powerful force. In this rewarding though often repetitious study by bestselling author Levitin (This Is Your Brain on Music), a rock musician turned neuroscientist, argues that music is a core element of human identity, paving the way for language, cooperative work projects and the recording of our lives and history. Through his studies, Levitin has identified six kinds of songs that help us achieve these goals: songs of friendship, joy, comfort, knowledge, religion and love. He cites lyrics ranging from the songs of Johnny Cash to work songs, which, he says, promote feelings of togetherness. According to Levitin, evolution may have selected individuals who were able to use nonviolent means like dance and music to settle disputes. Songs also serve as memory-aids, as records of our lives and legends. Some may find Levitin's evolutionary explanations reductionist, but he lightens the science with personal anecdotes and chats with Sting and others, offering an intriguing explanation for the power of music in our lives as individuals and as a society. Fans that have read This Is Your Brain on Music are in for another treat; newcomers to Levitin will still find much to enjoy in this consideration of music and human civilization. Levitin writes with both knowledge of neuroscience and evolutionary biology and a deep appreciation for the musician’s craft—one that will resound loudly with musicophiles. The New York Times Book Review, however, questioned some of Levitin’s “unprovable” scientific claims, and others faulted him for taking a reductionist view of evolution, shamelessly namedropping, cherry-picking songs from a select era, and failing to edit a verbose tome. Despite such flaws, most readers will find something to connect with in the book—even if it’s just one song.

How Joni Mitchell and Pete Seeger Created Human Nature
By Amazon Customer
Daniel J. Levitin, a former record executive turned neuroscientist, pals around with David Byrne, Sting, Joni Mitchell and other celebrities in a book whose purpose is to define the six architypal songs of the human race. The chapters are titled for one of the six types, with an additional chapter for love songs. The content of each chapter is a haphazard collection of autobiographical anecdotes, interviews, evidence from anthropology, and examples from his and his colleagues research. Beyond straight forward declarations of what makes the chapters's song type an archetype , most of the material provides little evidence or even a compelling reason to be included in the chapter.

Each chapter includes uninspiring song examples that seem to undermine his claim of significance. Mr Levitin apologies for this in the final chapter claiming the examples are provided for a common frame of reference and are not meant to represent the best of the genre. If great examples are so hard to come by, what makes these categories more than arbitrary?

This seems most evident in the chapter on religious songs. When composers like Bach have spent their entire career writing religious music, is Leon Russell's Superstar performed by Carpenter's the most worthy mention? How is a study of Arcade Fire lyrics pertinent while Handel's Messiah mearly gets mentioned by name?

Levitin stresses how little difference there is between humans and the rest of the animal kingdom. He fails to show that the musical brain he attributes to humans is an important distinction.

The World in Six Songs, by Daniel Levitin
By A2900
This is an enjoyable, very interesting and thought-provoking book by someone who knows music from both the commercial/industry and scientific sides. Levitin advances a number of ideas, based largely on science, but which really amount to conjecture -- he doesn't posit them, but he repeats them often enough that it is clear that he really believes them. I found a number of these ideas to be plausible but not necessarily convincing. This is not a criticism, but rather to say that I have other ideas and/or am not so sure that his conjectures are right. Indeed, some of these ideas seem downright simplistic.

More of a criticism -- though this may be a criticism of me, not Levitin -- is that he extensively makes references to contemporary popular music and musicians to give examples of what he is writing. Being raised on classical music, I found most of these examples useless.

I haven't read it, but, from what I have heard, another of Levitin's books, "This Is Your Brain on Music," sounds like a better and more scientifically based book. I intend to read it next.

Interesting ideas, but far too long for them
By Legis
Not nearly as good as "This is your brain on music". Although the core ideas are very interesting, the book should be much shorter. The author delves into too many and too long personal stories to go to the point.

A page-turner
By Cloggie Downunder
Set Up is the first novel in the Luke Dunlop series by Australian author, Peter Corris and is set in Sydney in 1992. Luke Dunlop (not his real name) is an ex-cop turned Witness Protection Officer. In one of his first assignments, his task is to find a way to hide celebrated prison escapee, Kerry Loew, after his testimony against two men accused of the murder of the Assistant Police Commissioner. Things are running smoothly until Dunlop meets the TV-star wife with her own checkered past, Cassie May Loew and he finds his priorities changing. This is a fast-paced action-filled novel with realistic characters, credible dialogue and a plot that twists and turns. Corris`s inclusion of his (then) hometown of Coledale will appeal to Illawarra locals. A page-turner.

LOVE this! Excellent resource!
By ShannonHaze
Love love LOVE this! I am a pasta-FIEND. It is the one true holdback for my attempt at eating healthy. Sprializing the veggies gives me the same look and feel of pasta so for me THAT alone is worth the cost of this book.
It is hard to eat as many veggies as we should as adults, much less to get the kids to. Finding recipes for healthy and flavorful ways to cook veggies like this is a blessing to a mom. Something about the spiral cut makes it FUN. It's also lighter and can soak up more flavor this way, giving you more of the flavor and less dull thick veg.
This would be a great for any Paleo, gluten free and low carb'ers as well as anyone who wants a fun way to consume more veggies.
This book gives you details about what will and will not "spiralize" well as well as traditional carb counts for items like pasta that you can replace spiralized veggies with to see how much more beneficial the fruits or veg are for your diet!
It also breaks down pros and cons of various types of spiralziers for you and gives handy tips for success in using a spiralizer.
Breakfasts, snacks and sides, salads, soups, vegetarian and vegan, fish and seafood, meat and poultry, classic cravings (things like "spaghetti" and meatballs), baked sweets, kitchen staples (such as stocks and vinagrettes) are the categories you get recipes for. I have to say I didn't expect anything like this and was amazed at all the various recipes.
The recipe I cannot wait to try is Coconut, Ginger and Shitake Soup!
I give this an A+++

A must for Spiralizer owners
By Nikki
The healthy Spiralizer cookbook is the first book I have come across that specifically has the recipes using spiralizer. I own both hour glass spiralizer and the hand cranked one. This book is a must for people who own spiralizer. It gives a whole lot of recipes using these.
The author calls noodles “Zoodles” and rightfully so. Most used vegetables are Zucchini, carrots, sweet potatoes and cucumbers. You’ll find recipes for breakfast, snacks and side dishes, salads, soups and stews, vegetarian and vegan, fish and seafood, meat and poultry and even for pizza, spaghetti and casserole and baked goods. It also gives you a list of kitchen staples.
Every recipe indicates which spiralizer and blade to use, prep time and cook time. It also lists the nutritional information per serving.
Using these recipes one can prepare delicious meals in no time. You can have a diet high in fruits, vegetables and fiber and eat low carb. It tells you which vegetables and fruits to use for spiralizer along with their calorie amount. Each recipe tells you if it is gluten free, Paleo friendly and vegan. This is very helpful for people following a specific diet.
I have tried a few recipes and like them. The salads are so easy while using a spiralizer. Make your own dressing and enjoy. My favorite is sweet, sour and spicy raw cucumber noodles. So easy to make, looks beautiful and tastes great.
I like this book and going to try more recipes. Even if you don’t own a spiralizer, this book will inspire you to go out and get one. I received this book for free for my honest opinion.

It's a useful, well-organized cookbook.
By Seonna
I have made several recipes from this book, notably the zucchini noodle chicken soup and the zucchini noodle puttanesca. (I do not like calling them "zoodles," that's the only thing about the cookbook I find annoying. I realize that's a personal preference issue.)

Both dishes were fantastic, filling, and delicious; everyone who tried some of it loved it. Even my dad, who's a big guy with a hearty appetite, found these dishes satisfying. I had thought originally assumed that vegetable and fruit noodles would be less filling than grain-based noodles, but I was wrong. They were plenty satisfying (I guess due to the fiber and water content) and I felt a lot better physically after eating them compared to how I feel after eating regular noodles.

Spiralizers can make very long noodles. I found it helps to snip them a bit shorter with some scissors as I'm churning them out of the spiralizer. It makes them easier to serve. I suppose that's not that different from making regular noodles, come to think of it.

I like the organization of this book. The directions are well-written, nutrition information is included, and the recipes are great. There's all sorts that would suit various dietary needs. I also appreciate that the book goes into how to use spiralizers properly and what produce works best. With that information I'm finding it easy to come up with my own recipes, too.

Attached is a photo of the zuchinni noodle soup. I love the color from the skin of the zuchinni.

That reminds me - I do live at a higher altitude which is probably why; but I found I usually have to cook the noodles longer than the book suggests to get the consistency right. A lot longer. Just a heads-up.

In the words of one leading American astrophysicist, our universe appears to be "founded on two mysterious, invisible components whose influence is palpable but whose nature is totally obscure". These components – dark matter and dark energy – are now believed to make up 95 per cent of everything in the universe. While scientists have developed some theories about dark matter, they don't even know where to look for dark energy. Can we be sure these enigmas really exist? And will we ever find out exactly what they are?

Is dark energy like quantum entanglement evidence for back-from-the-future influences?
By Jack Sarfatti
Very clear easy to understand informative review of modern astrophysics and cosmology for the young student and layman. Even some professionals in the field may learn something new and surprising that dark energy may well be a new kind of high energy Hawking gravity radiation back from our future de Sitter cosmological horizon's quantum gravity fluctuating thickness at the Planck length 10^-33 cm. The boundary condition needed on the graviton propagator is opposite to the usual one for retarded radiation. That is, the advanced black body radiation gravity redshifted down to temperature T ~ A^-1/4Lp^1/2 where A = area of our future de Sitter horizon etc. must propagate negative energy forward in time, i.e. positive energy backward in time to make repulsive gravity. This is the mirror image of ordinary retarded radiation.

Beautiful Child, by Torey Hayden

From the bestselling author of One Child comes this amazing, true story of a mute and withdrawn seven—year—old girl and the special education teacher determined never to abandon a child in need.

Seven-year-old Venus Fox never spoke, never listened, never even acknowledged the presence of another human being in the room with her. Yet an accidental playground “bump” would release a rage frightening to behold. The school year that followed would be one of the most trying, perplexing, and ultimately rewarding of Torey Hayden’s career, as she struggled to reach a silent child in obvious pain. It would be a strenuous journey beset by seemingly insurmountable obstacles and darkened by truly terrible revelations—yet encouraged by sometimes small, sometimes dazzling breakthroughs—as a dedicated teacher remained committed to helping a “hopeless” girl, and patiently and lovingly leading her toward the light of a new day.

From Publishers Weekly
Hayden has chronicled experiences from her long career as a special education teacher in several books, including One Child and The Tiger's Child. Successes in this difficult and often frustrating field can be few and hard-won, which Hayden deftly illustrates while simultaneously offering hope and joy in small victories. This time she brings to life the story of a scruffy seven-year-old, Venus, who is so unresponsive that Hayden searches for signs of deafness, brain damage or mental retardation. Familiar with Venus's siblings, other teachers warn Hayden not to expect much from Venus. Yet the author is relentless in her attempt to diagnose the cause of Venus's "almost catatonic" state, which is punctuated by occasional violent outbursts. Suspecting "elective mutism," a refusal to talk "for psychological reasons," Hayden persists in trying to draw Venus out. Her patient dedication finally pays off when the girl shows an interest in She-Ra, Princess of Power comic books. From there, a story of domestic abuse, removal to foster care and a slow emergence from silent isolation unfolds. However, Venus is not the only fascinating character here. Hayden sets Venus's bittersweet and complex story against the backdrop of other students, including one boy with a very high IQ but behavioral problems, another with Tourette's syndrome and a girl who inexplicably spouts sophisticated poetry and talks to her hand. In this first-person narrative, Hayden also shares her own thoughts, worries and strained relationship with a mismatched classroom aide, creating a rich tapestry of the dynamics of a group of special needs youngsters and the adults who try to help them.

From School Library Journal
Adult/High School-A crisply analytical depiction of one year in a special education classroom. Hayden's approach is straightforward and heartwarmingly compassionate not only in its portrayal of the relationships she developed with her students, but also in its appraisal of a philosophical conflict with her teacher's aide and the effect this had on the functioning of the students. The challenge of creating a highly structured, safe, yet sensitive and supportive environment for five children between the ages of six and nine, all with multiple emotional and developmental handicaps, is a study in creativity, perseverance, and keen observation. The author vividly describes her early struggles to inspire bonding among her charges and incremental progress in leading them toward norms of social behavior. The book ultimately focuses on Venus, age seven, whose impoverished and abusive home life frames the backdrop upon which her steps toward trust are poignantly rendered. Twins Shane and Zane, affected by fetal alcohol syndrome; Jesse, afflicted with Tourette's syndrome; and brash and aggressive Billy certainly present a full spectrum of challenges, but it is with Venus that the teacher's most indomitable problem-solving skills are engaged. Insightful and eminently readable, this book will be of particular value to students with a career interest in special education, social services, or counseling.

From Library Journal
Special education teacher Hayden is known for her powerful stories of children suffering from various forms of child abuse and trauma. Beautiful Child is another such story. As she did in her previous best sellers (Just Another Kid, Ghost Girl, The Tiger's Child), Hayden passionately narrates the story of her work with a special-needs child, Venus an unresponsive, almost catatonic seven-year-old girl. (Hayden also introduces us to the other children in her classroom primarily to Billy, Jesse, and twins Shane and Zane.) Called "beautiful child" by Wanda, the "sister" who brings her to school, Venus is far from beautiful: her appearance is unkempt, and she morphs from a brick wall into a banshee when her space is invaded. Hayden thoughtfully describes her struggles to form this particular class into a cohesive group and the many techniques used to coerce even the smallest response from Venus. Slowly, the class bonds, and even more slowly comes progress with Venus. This inspiring true story is recommended for most special-education as well as psychology collections. Another year of Torey's teaching
By laura hely
I have followed Torey Hayden's teaching career from the beginning. Each year her teaching methods srrm to evolve as she is met with a new group of students. All of Torey's pupils are individuals to her, each with their own set of problems and strengths. Most learn much from Torry, who seemo to learn much from each of them.

And the Walls Came Tumblling Down
By BeatleBangs1964
When author Torey Hayden first meets Venus, then 7, the child is perched atop a high wall on the school playground. Venus rarely speaks and goes into attack mode when jostled by other children on the playground. Venus remains a silent observer in the class she shares with 9-year-old Billy, a gifted child with a minor case of dyslexia and a propensity for impulsive behavior; 8-year-old Jesse, a boy who has Tourette's Syndrome; 6-year-old twins Shane and Zane who have the congenital condition of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and part-time resource pupils 8-year-old Gwennie, a bright girl whose behavior and verbalizations are described as autistic and 8-year-old Alice, also given to frequent non sequitors interspersed with very poignant comments.

This group finally unites after a series of setbacks. Early in the year, fighting broke out contantly among the boys; Venus, too displayed a fair share of aggression whenever she attacked someone who bumped into her. The tension among the pupils was paralleled in Torey Hayden's differing educational approaches with her aide, Julie.

Matters reach a critical head when Venus is placed on homebound instruction for 2 months after she severely injures another child. During her absence, the boys team up by forming the poignantly ironic named group, "the Chipmunks" as a way of helping one another and gaining positive reinforcement. When Venus returns, she literally has to start from scratch. A chance encounter with a 1980s comic figure, She-Ra, sparks her curiosity; from there, Venus and teacher Torey Hayden knock down yet another wall. Venus expresses her wishes for a better life and for power and a "magic sword" like She-Ra has; she begins to inch her way into the group.

More walls are knocked down; Julie is transferred to another school and an aide named Rosa takes her place. Rosa and Venus bond instantly; the love between them is truly heartwarming. The boys make remarkable strides as well. In one especially touching exchange, Billy tells Jesse how he has overcome his bigotry towards other races because he personally knows Jesse, who is a member of a different race than Billy. Major issues are explored; each child has good insights and heartwarming observations. During such round table discussions, even more walls come tumbling down.

As Venus develops more confidence in herself and relies less on She-Ra and her magic sword, she develops friendships in the class. Alice literally takes Venus under her wing and insists on "being best friends" with her. A good placement in a loving, nuturing home after having endured years of abuse and neglect also accelerates the progress Venus makes. I like the way the book provides updates on the progress of each pupil.

John Mellencamp's 1983 smash "Crumbling Down" could be the soundtrack of this book along with David Bowie's famous cover of Hunky Dory's 1971 hit "Changes."

I can't recommend this one highly enough.

moving chronicle
By A Customer
Not as powerful as the books starring "Sheila" ("One Child, "Tiger's Child") this one nevertheless is remarkable. It is atypical among the books that claim to chronicle the triumph of the human spirit, for the changes the teacher protagonist makes in the main student's life are small, and not as easily labeled miraclulous. In some ways, it lacks the satisfying conclusion of "One's Child." Venus, like many of the teacher's students is electively mute. The teacher's work with her is impeded by Venus' family's poverty, and lack of administrative support. Her attempts to find out even basic facts about Venus' background are hindered at every turn.
Yet, she does find ways to connect with the child, although one of the most powerful tools comes under fire for being politically incorrect. This book shows how even small steps of progress can be exciting.
I admire the writer's refusal to sugarcoat herself and her relationships with her students, the administration, and her classroom aide. Nothing is given an undeserving glossy finish here. And I suggest that the "coldness" some reviewers mention may be due to Venus, not her teacher, as she is much less verbal and emotionally expressive than say, Sheila of "One Child."
