Beauty and Substance.

This book is stunningly gorgeous, well-researched, and well-written. It's much "meatier" and in-depth than many exhibition catalogues, and has a lot of great insights about fashion and fantasy and fairy tales. It's a great accompaniment to the exhibition, but stands on its own. It also includes several essays on the theme by other scholars, including a wonderful essay on ballet and fashion by Patricia Mears.

About the Author
School Zone Publishing Company began as The School Zone Learning Center in 1972. The Learning Center was a retail teachers supply outlet, specializing in sales to teachers, with two stores in Grand Rapids, Michigan. About 1974, schools instituted changes in educational methods that affected the home and schools. Changes included introducing new teaching methods in math and English and eliminating workbooks provided on a shared basis for home use. With these changes, parents experienced difficulty finding educational material for use at home. Local parents turned to the Learning Centers, requesting workbooks and other at-home teaching aids. In response, the Centers formulated six workbooks and printed 1,000 copies of each. The books sold out in six months. An expanded workbook series was developed and received equally enthusiastic acceptance. School Zone Publishing Company was incorporated in 1979. A new line of workbooks had been written and illustrated by late 1979. In January 1980, the line was printed and School Zone began operations. Market response was extremely favorable. The product line has expanded yearly and currently includes almost two hundred educational products.

Great early reader book.

"I Want a Pet" is a truly great book for beginning readers. The illustrations are wonderful. The story is engaging. The words are age appropriate and the flow goes smoothly. My kids loved me reading this to them, and then they were reading it to me. Great book.

Not the Book you See

I expected the book that is shown. The one I got has a new illustrator I guess, because instead of a boy character, there is a girl. I knew the storyline from teaching, and the text is not quite the same and it goes on longer. I don't think the pictures are as strong as the original. It was for my grandson, an emergent reader, so I'm not as keen to give it to him now.

Thoughts: I didn't realize that this book was the second in a series when I first started it (it wasn't mentioned in the description and I'm not familiar with the author). It sounded intriguing and I love paranormal so I thought it would be a great read. Because of that, I found it a bit hard to get into this one....I just felt like I was missing way too much of the backstory. This was made worse by the fact that it focuses on different characters throughout, rather than sticking with a particular one. I'm not sure going back and reading the first one would help me get more into the story, or the series in particular - it just didn't seem up my alley. It was a good read, but not great - and I definitely recommend reading the prior book first.

About the Author
Thomas J. Schoenbaum received his JD in law from the University of Michigan and a PhD in Law from the University of Cambridge. He has practised and taught International Law since 1966 and is the author of numerous books and articles on legal matters. He has held academic appointments at the University of Cambridge and the University of Warwick in the UK, and from 1983 to 2003 he was Professor and Director of the Dean Rusk Center of the University of Georgia. He is now Research Professor at George Washington University Law School in Washington DC and Graduate Professor at International Christian University in Tokyo.

Inadequate

There are two issues with this book:
1. It is an introductory survey of existent international mechanisms, and one can find much of this information on the internet. There is no in-depth discussion of the use of these mechanisms. If you already work in the public international field or for an international organization, this book will probably be of no use to you.
2. The author appears to harbor a bias towards Islam and Muslims, and that when professing about international relations. He succumbs to the usual simplistic generalizations about the faith and its followers. Besides being bigoted, his statements are irrational: he lumps the diverse populace of the complex, Islamic world together as one, and attributes characteristics to them that pertain to all of humanity.
